Commenting is Awesome, You Should Try It

Posted by John Saddington on Dec 21, 2008

Content is king.  I’ve said that before in a number of ways.  But one of the most underused tricks that I’ve used to increase engagement, increase traffic, and increase interest here at this blog (and others) is to simply comment like a fiend.

I make a specific effort to not only re-comment on every single comment posted but also visit the author’s sites and drop a few here and there as well.  Google Reader helps me with this as well as I’ve got a list of popular users blogs who are spending the time engaging with me.

This way I can give the love back.

One of the greatest tricks up my sleeve to do this effectively, efficiently, and fast is the EasyComment plugin for FireFox.  The thing is a one-click-wonder where you can preset your information for nearly all comment forms found on blogs.

If you’re just like that you can even insert a standard “response”… I’m not one for this because I typically want to make my comments somewhat relevant instead of the obligatory “thanks!”.

Check it out and tell me what you think.

  1. Looks like a tasty add. I'll be giving it a go.
And I wholeheartedly agree with your philosophy about comments and traffic. Though I don't have the time I'd like to keep my commenting up to speed…

    • let me know how it runs!

  2. Anything to make me stop typing all that info is a plus. Awesome info!

  3. Add-on cool. More important is the message behind the recommendation: comment on other people's blogs.

You are so correct, check out and engage with the people's blogs that are commenting on yours. You cannot skip this. (I say again) You cannot skip this. Engaging with your community is so important.

I think we can take it a step farther. Utilizing Google Alerts you should also engage anyone talking about you on their blog. This is very valuable to engaging with those people that are talking about you.

Either way, do not forget to throw some comment love other people's ways. They love to receive it.

    • giving is better than receiving, right? …

      • I believe there is a scriptural lesson in there somewhere. You are so wise; so wise. The law of reciprocity??

        • puaha. you're killing me man.

  4. too bad im using safari mostly nowadays (firefox seems to be abusing my memory)

    • Finally some else who uses Safari as primary. I only use FF as another form of IDE.

    • too bad. safari. ugh…

  5. So is the key to getting comments to ask for them? Maybe I need to start doing that on my blog. I know I have readers, I just rarely have comment makers. :)

    • goes both ways. it helps. and people like it. :)

  6. i'll have to see for myself first, mister. you know what they say about old dogs and new tricks?yeah?forget 'bout it. downloaded, off to surf.
