Communication First, Technology Second

Posted by John Saddington on Dec 14, 2009

Only the first part of this video above is what I’m going to refer to (although the latter half is interesting as well).

I think the challenge that we continually have as technologists in the church space is to make sure that we are experts at communication first, technologists second.

Oh, how this typically is reversed…!

Let us be known by how we treat and communicate with others and then be known by how freakishly-awesome we are at technology.

  1. How true this is. In fact, in order to nail technology implementation communication MUST be first. Otherwise the tech is just noise.

  2. This SO TRUE! True, true, true. I try to preach this over at our blog. In fact my latest post is on this. http://blog.memberhub.com.

    • your blog is getting better and better. ;)

      • Thanks John. I might just have to use that blog title as a tagline!

  3. Caught my attention I kind of wish you would have went into this more also providing some solutions and best practices. Does one embrace technology to make communication better or do such communication tools as instant messenger, text messaging, twitter, even emails leave something lacking? And how about best methods for those like uppermanagement who mostly don’t have a clue about the technology side. I always had big barriers communicating with those types. Any suggestions?

  4. I like this video a lot.

So I stole it and wrote about it today too.

Though not really focused on the technology aspect of it….http://bit.ly/6UWFfN

  5. Love the video. Over the next 2.5 weeks (to be specific, Christmas Day) I'm activating email on Google Apps for my church's employees. We'll be using Google Apps to enhance our communications. They don't all know what that means yet… but they trust me that it will benefit them. Especially in the areas of calendar sharing, Google docs (which we'll probably use for time sheets) and contact list sharing! Hooray technology! But an "all caps" HOORAY for Communication!!!

  2. Communication First…Period | MemberHub

[...] Last week I put up a post on why nonprofit strategies often fail. The message wasn’t ground-breaking or all that entirely original. It was designed to get you asking yourself a lot of questions. My passion for great communication was refueled this morning when John Saddington challenged technology people to put communication first, technology second. [...]
