Internet For the Win

Posted by John Saddington on Jan 7, 2009

news_source2008I like the internet.  It provides me a number of things in this life, namely a source of income (and a whole lot of fun) but also a purpose and mission.

I digg that (yes, double-g digg).

And reports like these, as seen from the Pew Research Center, make me smile even more:

Currently, 40% say they get most of their news about national and international issues from the internet, up from just 24% in September 2007. For the first time in a Pew survey, more people say they rely mostly on the internet for news than cite newspapers (35%).

Yes, you read that right. It’s been widely hypothesized in the mainstream, but to see some good hard facts is also very helpful.  I also have issues with “concentration” so pictures help too!

But listen:  For the first time, the internet is a stronger source of national and international news in the US than the newspaper.

For the technoevangelist circuit, our role in the Church and the Gospel preached online is more important than ever.  As people encounter the stuff that we blog about, tweet about, and the software we use to reach them, it’s mission critical that we take advantage of this movement toward the online segment.

I’m pretty serious about this.  When was the last time someone was brought to “saving faith” from your local newspaper?

I’d hate to hear, in a few years from now, someone say “When was the last time someone was brought to “saving faith” online?”  … I’d love for my answer to be something close to: “Today, yesterday, and last week.”

Seriously, Internet FTW.

  1. Pretty soon the newspaper will go the way of the buggy whip? It does seem that way, but it may take years to wean all off the older ways of communication. (Hey, I stick listen to my 8 track. Only kidding)

    • 8 tracks are awesome. don't get rid of them.

  2. I Am Second (http://www.iamsecond.com/) seems like a pretty powerful technoevangelist effort. Is that the kind of thing you'd like to see more of? Or are you thinking more on a grassroots level (personal blogs, tweets, etc.)?

    • i was watching these this past weekend.. amazing.
