Misguided Technology Use

Posted by John Saddington on Nov 18, 2008

I have to admit: I like to be “innovative” and “creative” just like the next tech geek and sometimes I take it too far for a spin in the seat, but this guy has has me beat.

He’s using Twitter to turn on and off his lights.  You have to see it to believe it.

But here’s the challenge that I all think we can take away from this: Are we using technology properly?  Or are we creating uses that the medium never was intended for (and not that’s always a bad thing)?

Have you ever used a technology in such a way that was way outside the boundaries of it’s user manual?  I know that I have.  Perhaps the even greater question, and much more tough one, is whether this is the absolute best use of our time.

Remember, time is our most valuable and limited resource.

  1. Wow, how convenient. Instead of flipping a switch, you can now type out a whole tweet on a tiny phone and wait 30 seconds. In ministry, sometimes it's faster to do something that doesn't require a plug.

  2. … haha. most definitely.

  3. Dude… he turned his lights off with Twitter… that's just cool. Waste of time or not, that is cool.

  4. Wow. That's pretty amazing. I think though when it comes to your question about using technology the way it was meant to be; I think that my problem is that I don't use technology to it's fullest potential. I am lazy sometimes.

  5. ah. laziness. not every NEEDS to be all out on tech.. and that's a good thing. i know some of the “rocks” of my faith and life don't ever get online…

  6. He's very creative and resourceful on what he did, but its amazing.

  7. it is pretty fly. i mean, seriously… the guy's got talent.

  8. i want to learn those ninja skills.
