One Way to Commit Suicide on Facebook: Seppukoo

Seppukoo, which is a different spelling of the oft-spelled “seppuku” or “hari-kiri” is a Japanese form of ritual suicide by disembowelment.

Not a pleasant picture, and if you’ve ever seen this in a number of Anime movies then you know what I’m talking about.

Apparently, a website has been created to let Facebook users publicly kill themselves in a “radically chic” way: Seppukoo.com.

They’ve gone to lengths to even stylize the site like that of Facebook (at least content bucket areas).

So, what happens? It simply uses FB’s API to de-activate your account. You can, of course, re-activate right after you go all seppuku on yourself:

The main purpose of the project is not to become a real social network competitor but to inspire a ludic introspection about using them.

Seppukoo in not connected in any way to Facebook, it just acts as a normal user would do, deactivating his account using a great user interface as a nudge for this consciousness end of life choice.

Please note: in order to commit Seppukoo you have not to kill yourself in real life. Really.

And after all, killing yourself in real life won’t unsubscribe you from Facebook. NEVER.

Thoughts?

I actually find the usage of Facebook’s API quite clever and ingenious, although the purpose behind it is a little grotesque.

Some people have a lot of free time. I could use some of that.

  1. Caption Please!?!

  2. As Achmed would say: "That was dark!"

  3. Wow, that's tense. I hadn't heard of it. As you said, I like seeing third party sites using the facebook API though, just from a creativity standpoint. I'm looking forward to what else people come up with. Does anyone have any really cool ideas? Maybe slightly less morbid?
