Screencasting 101
This year I’d love to spend a bit more time doing “neat” things like screencasting. I’m no professional, that’s for sure, so there’s definitely some room for improvement.
For those that need a quick definition:
A screencast is a digital movie in which the setting is partly or wholly a computer screen, and in which audio narration describes the on-screen action. It’s not a new idea. The screencaster’s tools—for video capture, editing, and production of compressed files—have long been used to market software products, and to train people in the use of those products.
I think video is a powerful educational tool. I think we need to use it more.
Here are some resources that I’ve collected and drummed up. I’d love to know if you have any more as well!
- Smashing Magazine’s Primer – Good stuff.
- What Is Screencasting? – Udell is the man.
- Strategies for Kicking Butt – Same guy, more taste.
- Kanter’s Intro – Different Types, Resouces, How, What, Why… Yeah. Excellent.
- Primer Wiki – Comprehensive, to say the least.
- Screencasting News – News you can use, as they say.
- More Screencasting News – Etc.
- Tool Reviews – I dig.
- Another Good Comparison – Nice pics.
- Ultimate Comparison – Wow.
- Wiki Comparison – Wiki has a good dbase.
- Screencasting on a Mac – If that’s the way you dance.
- Practical How-To’s – They show you how… via a screencast. Brilliant.
Got any more that I need to put on the list?

I use Jing to do some screencasting. Mostly I've recorded videos showing volunteers and staff how to carry-out specific tasks in our CMS. I find that it works GREAT for this purpose because it saves us having to schedule a meeting for me to show them how to do something, and they can refer back to the video if the forget or need a reminder on how to do something. …a win-win.
They don't provide tutorials on how to DO screencasts, but the videos at HeathenX.org are excellent examples of useful screencasts. They frequently have great tutorials on simple graphics designs that can be of great help to web developers (banners, etc).
Thansk for this resource… awesome!

Preach it
And a powerful tool for leading people to Christ!!
Now if I could just convince everyone else …..
HAHAHAHA… it starts with 1.
Screentoaster is my favorite screen casting. You can overlay your voice and even webcam very easily. It uploads to screentoaster.com in extremely high quality. Super easy to use.
Also, here is a great list of free tools to get started screencasting.
dude, you are KILLING it. thanks!
For sure. i've tried jing, but stopped… what's the “sell” for using it
I've only used Jing and Screenflow, but I really dig the Jing UI and I like that I can record up to 5 minutes of video without having to purchase the software (I don't do long screencasts, so it works just fine for me).
ah. forgot that it had a cap on the freebie. thx!
yeah. i've had some issues with it working in the past…
screencasting is a very handy tool, i've seen it used recently by the guy who developed wp sermon browser. That would be cool if you did that. nothing like a little hands on training, or eyes-on in this case.
for sure.
Maybe I should give this a try to help volunteers get on board quicker
i think it may help! let us know how it rolls.
