Sunday Special QA No. 41

Posted by John Saddington on Jan 3, 2010

It’s that time again…! Sunday’s a good day to take it easy.

I’ve decided that on Sundays I’m not going to do any blogging except for a very simple post series called “The Sunday Special” where you get to ask me anything.

You can ask about me about web technology, Wordpress, blogging, what I ate for breakfast… whatever.

I can’t promise that I’ll answer all of your questions, but feel free to answer each other’s questions as well.

I’ll try to answer all the questions throughout the coming week.

Simple enough, right? Go.

  1. This doesn’t necessarily quality as a question. But you could do a post on clever ideas and techniques to get the most out of a clover website.

    • sounds like a good idea.

let me think about that, thanks anthony! stay tuned…

  2. John, how much should a really nice, wordpress blog design cost? I am looking to take it no the next level, but don't know what a good price is…
    Advice?

    • a nice blog design could cost as low as 20 bucks. ;)

there are a number of wordpress theme designers who sell their themes. check human3rror.com's sidebar for some examples.

      • Thanks, will do! Going beyond themed, what does a WP design that's coded go for? Does Milk Engine do small projects such as these? BTW, Michael Hyatt's and Ragamuffin Soul are insanely cool looking blogs, well done.

        • :)

obviously we do creative design. the cost can be high but worth it for the right business/person.

if you're seriously interested, send me an email. john@milkengine.com

  3. Can we ask more than one? :)

    1. Is there a list somewhere of the WP plugins you use / suggest?
    2. Do you suggest using the WP auto update or doing manual updates for new versions of WP?

    Thanks.

  4. Okay, I just talked to a client today who wants a site that's about half informational and half user-generated with a message board/social network type thing. I don't know how computer savvy she is, but I'm not going to be maintaining it for her.

Do you know of anything I could use to create this site for her?
(My first thought honestly was Ning, but I have spent minimal time there.)

    • ning could definitely work. look here on this blog for a couple other options.

  5. Hi John,

Not sure if this is really your 'department' as such, but who interacts with your church website more, visitors, or regulars as your church? If it is regulars, how do you get them to interact?

    • we get a good mix actually. we don't have much of a \”social network\” for our members, we hope that happens as a much smaller level, at the small group level, for example.
