The Catholic Church Goes to China Online

Posted by John Saddington on Mar 16, 2009

chineseinternetI applaud the Catholic Church and their attempts to move into spaces where they might not be so welcome.

It’s definitely more than can be said for a number of other institutions.

But at least they are trying, and that’s good. They’ve done their research.

Launching a Chinese Website for the Catholic Church could be huge.

China is one of the fastest growing areas from an online perspective. I’ve already blogged about how China Needs Some Missional Bloggers because of their fantastic growth rate.

It makes complete sense that organizations, both the secular and non, should jump right in and take advantage of the boom.

Even if they get perma-banned on launch.

But the message that they are bringing is worth the risk.

  1. I wonder how that is going to work out for them when the Chinese government decides to firewall their website…

  2. I need to connect you with a guy from our church who lives in China, I'll send him your site in case he doesn't already read it but he is pretty deep into the church culture in China.

  3. that's a good connection,

  4. I'll go a step further to say that I'd love to find a way to sponsor someone who is a techno wiz/evangelist who has a heart for China. We need a Hudson Taylor meets techno-evangelist. Set them up with a consulting type gig and play undercover brother for a few. I've got some peeps in N. Africa and Mongolia that started companies as evangelical platforms.

  5. that would be awesome.
