Twitter vs. Blogging – Twitter Makes Blogs Better

Posted by John Saddington on Mar 23, 2009

My brother Tony blogged the other day about his thoughts on Twitter in comparison to Blogging.

Some key takeaways from him:

  • micTwitter is easier to scan. Less is more. People gravitate to shorter messages.
  • Twitter is more social. It’s easier to engage the crowd around a brief shot of wisdom or a story or a question.
  • Twitter is more viral. It’s easy to grab an insight and share it with friends.
  • Twitter is more intuitive. To follow someone, I just click “follow.” Blogs still require a bit of an understanding of RSS feeds.

The net-net result of his thoughtlog is that he’d rather Tweet it up than blog. No problem with that sir!

I’d say, in response, that Twitter is making blogs better.

Twitter is not blogging. It’s microblogging. It’s actually empowering those that blog.

You see, every “tweet” is a blog post that hasn’t been written. If that’s true (and it is), then tweeting is a farm-ground for great blog post ideas.

I’m “farming” more than ever.

Secondly, the simple fact is that every tweet isn’t being blogged. Period. When a blog post does happen and/or is created, the value of the blog post is increased.

As one commenter put it:

Blogging is here to stay, and we can thank Twitter for that.

  1. Another way Twitter and blogging work together well: I see my blog as the "read more" to some of my Tweets. The tweet gives the nugget thought; if the follower wants to hear more of my thoughts on the matter, she can follow the link to a (fuller) blog post about it.

  2. hmmm, twitter is a extension to blogging.
but as a substitute – it would be like shooting shotgun shells into water.

  3. Here is a way – to get around 140 characters: http://shriink.org
and here is what I twittered: http://twitter.com/phillipgibb/statuses/137541098...

  4. I decided on my next blog post topic earlier today because of a DM conversation I was having with a fellow Twitterer! Twitter definitely encourages blogging!

  5. i've used a shotgun before…!

  6. you deviant you…

  7. that's a good way of looking at it… but can you imagine some of the garbage from my “read more” tweets…?

  8. twitter makes blogging sexy
