Vimeo Goes Mobile: Continues to be a Great Ministry Video Alternative
This is a Guest Post by Kyle Gilbert.
Over the past couple of years, an increasing number of ministries have started using Vimeo for website video purposes.
If you’re not familiar with Vimeo, it’s similar to YouTube, but it’s not for commercial purposes, normally has better video quality, and allows for videos longer than ten minutes.
Well, earlier this week, Vimeo announced that Plus users can now enable their videos for mobile content:
Plus users who own an iPhone, iPod Touch, Android, or Palm Pre can now go to our mobile site, vimeo.com/m and make mobile versions of their videos.
After logging in, click “My Videos” then the “Generate Mobile Videos” button! (Please allow some time for your videos to bake in the transcoder ovens.)
This is a huge addition to the already fantastic feature set Vimeo offers through their Plus accounts.
Although mobile page embedding doesn’t currently work, this is a feature that they plan on implementing quickly – making your videos playable on mobile phones directly from your own website.
If you’re a Plus user, you can enable mobile video by going to an existing video on your account. Click “Settings”, “Video File”, and then check the box next to “Make mobile versions of all my videos.” Once you save that change and wait about a day while the videos are encoded.
Or, of course, you can just hit the beautiful blue button (see image on the left).
Vimeo’s been constantly updating their services and has been an impressive offering historically.
So, who’s using Vimeo as their preferred provider? What do you think?

I have a plus account for my personal use and for my church. So glad this feature was finally released!
Thanks for the update!
Been waiting on this. I am using Vimeo for church and we may begin using it for school as well. This is a big addition.
I have been using Vimeo for our church's video needs for about a year. It's amazing to show people how much the internet is a way to reach people. We average 200 people a week in service. There will be around 40-50 views of the service online each week. That means we've reached 25% more people than our live church service does! I think many people still don't realize how much the internet reaches out into our culture. Now they can watch on their phones!
But as we learned yesterday, God doesn't speak through Youtube. Maybe he does through Vimeo. : )
dude, that's awesome! love the stats!
Our church has been using Vimeo for the last 10 months w/ a Plus membership. We've been very pleased with the service. The desktop uploader also is a nice new feature.
yeah, i have liked the d-loader.
Not having mobile videos has been VIMEO's one big fault…no longer will it keep me from using it!
Thanks for the update!
hurray!
Vimeo is definitely the preferred choice and this just makes that a better choice! Great post.
Talk to me. Remedy9.
I'm a Vimeo Plus user and have made the choice (for now… forever?) to stick with it as my one video hosting service. I haven't messed with YouTube at all at this point. In fact, I just posted a message I gave this past weekend on my blog today using Vimeo. It's clean, reliable, has a beautiful interface, and it doesn't have the "I'm still in High School" vibe I get from YouTube. Thanks for the heads up about the mobile formatting. One more reason I'm glad I'm with Vimeo. As per usual, great post John.
