Watch Parties – Combining the Offline with the Online

Posted by John Saddington on Apr 21, 2009

96153535_982c5c3da8A few days ago Brandon Donaldson wrote a few wise thoughts about how to effectively have a Watch Party.

Genius.

I think that by bringing people into a comfortable and personal environment that would definitely enable deeper and more effective conversation with those that you may invite. What I love the most about this is that it’s combining the online with the offline superbly.

I always knew they could complement each other well.

Dana Byers then blogged a little later how she actually did it and it worked. Sweet!

How are you using technology to enhance your offline interactions?

  1. Well, my experience is along the same lines, but a little different. Last Friday, or Life Group tapped into the power of Skype to keep one of our members connected. He does work on radar systems and these projects call for him to be on the road for weeks at a time. Rather than missing out, he got to stay involved. His wife sent him the workbook ahead of time. Then using Skype and two web-cams, he was able to interact with us the entire night despite being 1,300 miles away. Here's an image of him set up and ready to roll. He was able to hear the message (for this Friday, I've ripped the DVD video so he can watch along with us via iTunes) and interact during the Q&A period.

If you think about it, it wasn't too long ago that this wouldn't have been possible without an expensive video conferencing setup.

  2. wow. that is awesome!

  3. during the election debates, we had people over to watch. on a whim, i decided to augment the viewing process with the live feed that twitter had running all through the election. it was fun not only hearing what those in the room had to say about what was going on, but also to see the comments that others around the world were making as well.

  4. Andrew,

    That's awesome! sounds like a good idea…

  6. I have done and am thinking about starting back up again our movie church. We did it on a two week cycle, where we ate a simple dinner (in front of the tv) and watched a movie one week and then the next week we ate a more involved dinner around the table and discussed the movie. One manifestation of this was a small group from church where 5 of the six that regularly attended either had or work working on an advanced degree in theology or MDiv. That was a very different group that what we are hoping to start soon with primarily non-Christian friends.

But we used the language of the media and movies to help us illistrate the meaning of life. Different methods, but can be the same end result.

  7. We've actually been doing these watch parties for over 2 years now in all 3500 small groups (houses of peace) and we have had reports of people in South America that gather in their homes, and even movie theaters to watch the transmission of our online services. The great thing is that this came without us even initiating it, it just happened. The results have been amazing and the people are being touched even coming weeping to their TV sets and thearther floors – point is, souls are being saved and the kingdom is being advanced.

  8. We've been encouraging viewing parties at the NewSpring web Campus for a while also. As with Lifechurch.tv, we think it is a superb extension of the web campus and we too have seen great success. Further proof that there's no such thing as a new idea ;)

  9. epic!
