WordPress is Eternal

And that’s why (if you haven’t) you should migrate your blog to WordPress.
We, being “people of eternity”, should be using software that aligns with that ethos.
Haha. Have I gone too far? Probably.
But consider seriously that blogging applications and software that you’re choosing to use.
Functionally, I could argue forever about how WordPress is far and away the best semantic publishing platform on the planet. But, that might not convince you because you’re satisfied with the platform and functional abilities of your current blog.
It, just, works. And that’s cool! That’s fine.
But what if your software suddenly “disappears”? What if the company that runs the blogging software closes down?
Oh snap.
Recently I blogged about how JournalSpace went all crazy and they lost EVERY SINGLE ONE of their blogger’s blogs. Sure, they weren’t the biggest blogging platform, but the loss was catastrophic for those who used it exclusively.
It has now been confirmed that LiveJournal, a MEGA blogging platform is beginning to show signs of the deadpool, firing 20 of their 28 employees due to financial issues.
Did you know that LiveJournal is also a business owned by a company in Russia?
The bottom line is that WordPress is “Open Source” and will never close it’s doors. It’s just fundamentally and philosophically impossible.
I like those odds. I like those odds a lot.
What do you think?

Is Twitter Eternal?
[...] If they can’t figure a way to get some money out of the beast then it’s going bye-bye. I think they could probably learn something from WordPress… [...]

WordPress is ETERNAL: HEHE! http://tinyurl.com/9wrxwc

I DO like those odds and that's why I run WP and tell all my friends to do the same!
Just yesterday I evangelized a friend and convinced him to use WP as both a cms and start blogging on his name[.com] (he was about to go the blogspot route). Using a stock theme for now but I am definitely getting my hands wet in hacking/customizing bits and pieces here and there. Oh yea, and did I mention IntenseDebate too
I still love this service!!
His blog url is: http://www.donavonhill.com/
Awesome!! Another one snatched from the non-WP clutches. Nice job Dan.
saved from the clutches of evil.
dude, you rock.
What gives me a little extra comfort is the fact that I have the blogging platform on my own web servers. That means that if WP.com did happen to shut its doors (yeah right, who are we kidding??) I could still run my blog without many consequences. That is pretty cool to think about.
Oh, that reminds me. I better go and backup my database. hehe.
backup is king. preach it.
Ya know it! Ahh, I see you are catching back up with your comments. Are your fingers tired yet?
dude, you have noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo idea.
Not to mention how well this whole eternal, open source, built-by-the-community thing meshes with the concept of the New Testament church.
this is the one point i purposely left off… i wanna talk more about that later…. or you could write it..!
I'm a control freak, so I love having my software, on my servers, using my design, using my content, backed up on my desktop. Gimee, gimme…
I've written (and am rewriting) a book titled Web Site Starter Kit that explains how to set up a site using WordPress. It's aimed at complete beginners.
WordPress rocks.
i'm a freak too.
couldn't agree more. wp ftw!
ditto.
I totally agree! This is one of the reasons that I migrated, last month, from Typepad to a self-hosted WordPress blog.
dude, lots of peeps are moving from TP…
Awesome post. WordPress rules and is why I use it for my blog and may be using it for my portfolio soon as well. There are also some great features like using it as a cms, or even to create a social network of some sort. It's just awesome. And free is always a plus!
i like free.
Just remember to do database backups… there are plugins for that. If you use a low-bid host like most folks, you can count on a snafu at some point. Getting backups emailed to you is peace of mind and has saved my bacon on at least one very dark day…
i didn't believe you when you told me how easy wp is. it's easy and fun, this sounds like an info-mercial?
… where were you before?
Before you?I was going nowhere fast, bro!
I've noticed this too. It makes a lot ofsense. Its not that TypePad is bad or anything, its just that when it ends-up costing you more money and lets you do less it only seems logical to pull the plug.
I've been loving your posts on blogging. Good stuff!
